“WELL?” Calvin James asked.

Encizo ducked back into cover. He glanced across at Nasir Hanafi. “I think you were right. Small setup. I counted five guys outside. All Taliban. All carrying. They have an old Land Rover. No way of knowing if there are any inside or how many.”

“I was unable to gain complete information,” Hanafi said, “but I do know that both Rahman and the Taliban have used this place before to contain prisoners they wish to isolate.”

“And as far as that goes, they don’t have any other detainees at the moment?” James asked.

Hanafi shook his head. “I am not a great believer in coincidence, but your friends were captured within the last two days and no other incidents have been reported since.”

“So it’s looking to be a safe bet our guys are in there,” Encizo said.

“Works for me,” James said.

“Time to roll the dice and hope for boxcars.” James said.

“What does he say?” Hanafi was frowning.

James smiled. “Craps is an American dice game. Numbered dice are thrown. If you come up with both dice showing six, you’ve made a lucky throw. ‘Boxcars’ is slang for a pair of sixes. Sometimes it’s called midnight. Two sixes. Twelve. Midnight.”

Hanafi shook his head. “It can be a strange language sometimes.”

“Hey, I’m from Cuba,” Encizo said. “How do you think I get on?”

James finished checking his AK-47. He turned to his holstered autopistol. Encizo and Hanafi did the same.

“I wish I could have brought you more weapons,” Hanafi said. “These were all I was able to lay my hands on in the time I had.”

Encizo touched his shoulder. “No worries, Nasir. You did okay.”

“No point in waiting,” James said. “Longer we leave it the more the chance of reinforcements showing up. Let’s get close. Then we hit them head-on.”

“If there are more inside,” Encizo said, “and they hear shooting, they might decide to execute any captives. You two give me cover. Let me go straight inside. Once you’ve handled the outside group, follow me in.”

James nodded. “You sure?”

“I’m sure.”
